Margate, FL – Deputy Injured in Car Accident on Royal Palm Blvd

Margate, FL (January 15, 2022) – A deputy sustained injuries in a serious car accident during an arrest in Margate on Friday, January 14. 

 

According to Broward County officials, the accident happened on Royal Palm Boulevard around the area of the Margate shopping center and Rock Island Road. Deputies were attempting to arrest 34-year-old Alberto Lugo for a gun-related crime when his vehicle suddenly struck several patrol vehicles with force. 

 

Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other responders were immediately dispatched to the scene to help those in need. One of the deputies involved in the crash, identified only as a Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputy, was rushed to the hospital with a severe leg injury. It is not believed that anyone else was hurt in the accident. 

 

The roadway was blocked in the area of the intersection for some time until the scene was cleared. 

 

Lugo has since been arrested and charged with possession of a firearm. 

 

The investigation into the circumstances of the collision continues. Police will update as more information becomes available.
