North Port, FL (December 14, 2021) – On Tuesday afternoon, December 14, a fatal accident occurred on a highway in North Port that caused the vehicle to drive into a canal.
According to Broward County officials, the accident happened on I-75 around the area of the 29th-mile marker A driver was traveling in the area when, for reasons that are not yet known, they lost control of their vehicle. It went off the side of the road into the Alligator Alley canal. Witnesses saw that the vehicle was starting to sink quickly.
Witnesses at the scene jumped into action to save those sinking inside the vehicle. One man jumped into the water and pulled a lady and a child to safety. Another man jumped into the water and got a second child out safely but noticed that two women were still trapped inside the vehicle. The two rescued women were rushed to hospitals but were pronounced dead while there. The two children suffered from minor injuries but are expected to be okay. Another adult suffered from injuries and was treated at the hospital and is expected to recover.
The roadway was blocked in the area for an extended period of time.
